The Nicholl is arguably the world's most prestigious scriptwriting competition. Each year five Fellowships are awarded out of thousands of entries from all over the globe. Each Nicholl Fellow is required to complete one feature-length screenplay during his or her Fellowship year.
To fulfill his Fellowship obligation, Lynch wrote the screenplay that would one day become the film A Plumm Summer. The script was inspired by an actual incident in his hometown in which Froggy Doo, the wisecracking string-puppet host of the locally-produced kiddies' show, was kidnapped and held for ransom. A Plumm Summer stars William Baldwin, Henry Winkler, Lisa Guerrero, Brenda Strong, with narration by Jeff Daniels. It came out in limited release in April.
The Rocky Mountain west has been a wellspring of material for Lynch's writing. Its landscapes, its people and their stories have been the inspiration for many of his screenplays, including his Nicholl winner, The Beginning of Wisdom. Lynch and his producing partner are in the process of setting up the film for him to direct.
Lynch also does screenplay consultation on a limited basis. For further information as well as lots of screenwriting tips, go to www.writingisrewriting.com.
